Our Story

BALL HILL is located minutes from the historic Square in dowtown Newark. A fantastic one of a kind property with a park-like setting. The 6000 square foot Colonial Revival home was built in 1929 by the notable architect George Ball Jr. The original owners were Dr. Louis A. and Martha (Wright) Mitchell, who had five children (Ann, Edwin, Louis, John, and Martha). The Mitchell family owned the property from 1929 until mother Martha’s passing, in 1984.

The home rests atop a hill on the 3-acre property. Hence its name -BALL HILL - which honors the importance of George Ball Jr.’s architectural influence on local home building from 1915-1954. We proudly state that we live in a George Ball home!

Who are Kevin Connell and Christopher Stokes Moseley? We are the current owners of the property. We purchased the home in November of 2008 and have worked tiredlessly over the years to improve the landscaping and the restoration/renovation needs of the home.

BALL HILL is a delightful and refreshing retreat near the Historic Hudson District.

George Ball Jr.

George Ball Jr. (1875-1954) was a native of Newark, Ohio, and had a great deal of architectural influence on residential building in Newark, even though he had no formal training. Ball worked with his father in thye mercantile business until 1912, then he attended school in Columbus where he developed a relationship with architect Carl Howell.

Ball first appears professionally in the 1917-18 Newark city directory, where he is listed as “Architect.” Some of his early designs, starting in about 1915, favor a common use of stucco in a variety of styles, from Colonial Revival to Dutch and Spanish Colonial. He also designed in the English Arts and Crafts style, and is credited with 28 complete home designs in Licking County, as well as many more alterations and additions.
